Suspended Pollsmoor Warden Caught In New TikTok Flexing 28 Gang Signs

A fresh wave of scandal is shaking Pollsmoor Prison after shocking footage surfaced on social media showing a suspended warden allegedly flashing 28s gang signs.
The video, which went viral this week, features the same warden previously implicated in a separate incident involving a deal with an inmate over a confiscated cellphone.
The incident comes just a month after warden Bruce Van Rensburg made headlines for allegedly negotiating with convicted gang member Kyle du Toit not to seize his phone—an act that raised serious concerns in Parliament.

In the new video, posted by a woman claiming to be Du Toit’s girlfriend, the warden is seen making gang-related hand gestures. She openly stated her intent was to make the footage “go viral.”
Previous TikTok Deal Sparks Political Outcry
The original TikTok clip of Van Rensburg and Du Toit shocked both the public and political leaders, prompting Members of Parliament to demand answers from Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald.
Images also surfaced showing Du Toit taking selfies with his partner in the prison mang, painting a picture of disturbingly relaxed prison conditions. Following the scandal, Van Rensburg was suspended, and Du Toit now faces criminal charges after a case was opened at Kirstenhof SAPS.
According to DCS spokesperson Logan Maistry, the most recent video is not new, but its re-emergence has reignited scrutiny. “The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirms that all visitations to the Pollsmoor inmate, implicated in a TikTok video allegedly displaying negotiation for further use of the device, have since been duly suspended,” Maistry confirmed.

“Additionally, the official implicated has since been suspended pending finalisation of the investigation currently underway.”
Parliament Demands Accountability Over Pollsmoor Alleged Extortion
The Democratic Alliance’s Nicholas Gotsell, a member of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, is now calling for clarity on whether the warden involved will face criminal charges.
“The video depicts the warden extorting a c-voucher [correctional services currency] in exchange for not confiscating the phone,” Gotsell said.
He added that while a parliamentary reply confirmed a case was opened with Kirstenhof police, there is a need for explicit legal action.

“Clarity has been sought in respect of the act of extortion which was committed by the warden – as is depicted in the TikTok video. There must be consequences for transgressing inmates and wardens alike.”
With the Department of Correctional Services under increasing pressure, and Parliament watching closely, both inmates and officials at Pollsmoor may soon face serious legal consequences for their actions behind bars.
