Suspended EMPD Chief Reveals Criminal Cases Against Disbanded Unit Members

Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) head, Isaac Mapiyeye, has revealed shocking details about criminal activities allegedly committed by members of a now-disbanded unit within the department — including a murder case.

Mapiyeye, who was testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Friday, said at least five criminal cases had been opened against three officers from the former Special Weapons and Tactical (SWAT) unit.

He explained that the accused officers were all part of the controversial team previously led by acting EMPD head Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi, who is accused of having ties to tender mogul Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, currently facing criminal charges.

Murder Case Among Alarming Allegations

According to Mapiyeye, one of the criminal cases under investigation involves the 2022 murder of a man in Brakpan. The victim’s body was later recovered from a river by police.

“These cases involve the criminal conduct of three members of EMPD, and they are from a former team, which was called SWAT, which was headed by Brigadier Mkhwanazi,” Mapiyeye told the commission.
