Suspended Cop Fannie Nkosi Fights Bail As Explosives, Cash Found In Raid

Suspended South African Police Service (SAPS) officer Fannie Nkosi is set to return to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday for a formal bail application.

The 42-year-old sergeant, previously attached to the SAPS Organised Crime Unit, was arrested on 2 April following a raid at his home in Pretoria North.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed it will oppose his release on bail.

Explosives, Firearms and Cash Discovered in Fannie Nkosi

During Nkosi’s initial court appearance, details emerged about what authorities uncovered at his residence.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said: “It is alleged that the Task Team emanating from the Madlanga Commission received a tip off regarding the unlawful ammunition at the accused’s place of residence.”

A search warrant was executed, leading to the discovery of firearms, ammunition, a stun grenade, SAPS dockets and other state-issued items scattered across the property.

“During the search, a substantial amount of cash of more than R50 000 was concealed beneath a mattress,” Mahanjana said, adding that Nkosi could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the money.

Multiple Charges and Links to Madlanga Commission

Nkosi is facing a string of serious charges, including unlawful possession of explosives, failure to safeguard firearms and ammunition, defeating the administration of justice, theft, and non-compliance with firearm storage regulations.

He has also been linked to proceedings at the Madlanga Commission. The commission previously heard that during a separate search in October 2025, police allegedly found a credit card belonging to murder-accused businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat”.

Nkosi has defended his conduct, including not disclosing that Matlala had urgently requested the return of the card ahead of meetings with senior officials.

Following his arrest, Nkosi was remanded in custody, with prosecutors preparing to argue against bail.

The outcome of Monday’s hearing is expected to determine whether the suspended officer remains behind bars as the case continues.
