5 Suspected Cash-In-Transit Robbers Killed After Police Intercept Heist Plans

Five suspected cash-in-transit robbers were fatally shot during a violent shootout with police.

This shootout by the robbers took place at Ridgeview, near Chesterville, KwaZulu-Natal, on Wednesday afternoon.

The suspected robbers, believed to be part of a larger criminal syndicate, were wanted for their involvement in a recent cash-in-transit heist that took place on Monday, March 31, 2025, in KwaMashu.

Robbers Fatal Confrontation

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, an intelligence-led operation successfully tracked the suspects to the Ridgeview area.

Authorities had gathered information indicating the group was planning another heist in the northern iLembe District of KZN.

As police closed in on the suspects, they were met with gunfire, sparking a deadly exchange that resulted in the death of all five suspects.

Four firearms were recovered from the scene.

The suspects, who were from Gauteng, are believed to have been responsible for several high-profile cash-in-transit robberies across the country.

One of the deceased is suspected to have been a key figure, or “kingpin,” behind these violent crimes.

Despite the operation’s success, police continue to search for additional suspects connected to the robbery syndicate.

Robbers Injured And Theft

The shootout follows a brazen cash-in-transit robbery on March 31, 2025, in KwaMashu.

During the attack, armed suspects ambushed a cash-in-transit vehicle, detonating explosives and stealing an undisclosed amount of cash.

The guards inside the vehicle suffered minor injuries, but fortunately, no fatalities occurred.

Prem Balram, the head of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) said, multiple heavily armed suspects in two vehicles stopped the cash van and used explosives to break into it during peak traffic.

The robbers then stole firearms from the security officers and fired shots before fleeing in a white Ford SUV and a silver Toyota Corolla.

RUSA officers who were patrolling nearby were alerted to the situation and quickly responded to the crime scene.
