A birthday celebration for a one-year-old boy turned into a nightmare early Tuesday morning when a relative allegedly attempted to rape the infant at a home in Durban. The incident, reported at approximately 6:38 AM, has sparked outrage and prompted an urgent police investigation.

Family Celebration Turns Traumatic in Durban

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the child’s mother discovered the suspect—a male relative who had attended the boy’s birthday party the previous night—naked and on top of her son in her bedroom. The suspect had reportedly stayed overnight and requested to use the en-suite bathroom before the alleged assault.

The mother told RUSA officers she entered the room while preparing her daughter for school and found the man naked from the waist down, with his shirt pulled up to his chest. She immediately raised the alarm, prompting other family members to confront the suspect.

Women Assault Suspect Before Police Arrival

When Reaction Officers arrived at the scene, they found several women, including the child’s mother and grandmother, physically assaulting the suspect.

The man sustained open wounds to his face and mouth during the confrontation. Officers intervened to restrain him and covered him with a towel while awaiting South African Police Service (SAPS) backup.

A man identifying himself as the child’s father—and claiming to be a police officer—reportedly insisted on resolving the matter “internally” without formal charges. RUSA officers rejected the request and escalated the case to SAPS to ensure a criminal investigation.
