Suspect Nabbed After Cape Town Smash-And-Grab That Killed Nelspruit Gran

A 33-year-old suspect has been arrested for the brutal murder of Nelspruit grandmother Karin van Aardt, who was killed in a smash-and-grab attack on Jakes Gerwel Drive in Cape Town last Friday.

The 64-year-old retired teacher was travelling with her husband Herman when the attack unfolded at the busy Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue intersection.

Van Aardt and her husband had just landed at Cape Town International Airport after flying in from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. They were en route to Vredenburg to celebrate their only grandchild’s eighth birthday.

Suspect Smashed Window Before Repeatedly Stabbing Victim

According to reports in The Lowvelder, the couple had hired a vehicle and were making their way to the N7 when the attacker smashed the passenger-side window to steal Van Aardt’s handbag.

During the scuffle, she was stabbed multiple times. She was rushed to Netcare N1 City Hospital, where she was declared dead.

Police on Wednesday detailed the coordinated effort that led to the breakthrough arrest. “In a joint effort between the South African Police Service and City of Cape Town municipality law enforcement officials… integrated police deployments worked tirelessly by identifying, tracing and charging a 33 year old suspect for the incident,” a statement read.

Police Pounce on Suspect in Langa, More Arrests Expected

Authorities said vital intelligence helped officers track the suspect to Langa. “Armed with vital intelligence, the law enforcement officials pounced on the suspect in Langa. He was questioned by detectives who later charged him with murder and aggravated robbery,” police said.

Investigators believe more suspects may have been involved. “As the investigation unfolds, the arrest of more suspects is expected,” the statement added.

The arrested man is expected to appear at the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 11 December 2025.

Police also urged communities to come forward with information that may help curb similar attacks, emphasising intensified crime-prevention deployments during the festive season.
