Suspect Arrested For Rape Of Two Nurses In Limpopo; Linked To Over 10 Cases

A 27-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the rape of two nurses at Ga-Chuene Clinic in Limpopo and has been linked to more than 10 serious crimes in the Lebowakgomo policing area.

Arrest and Evidence Recovery

The suspect was apprehended at his home in Feke village, Ga-Maja, on Saturday. Police recovered a firearm and stolen items tied to other crimes. The suspect faces multiple charges, including rape, robbery, and possession of stolen property, and is set to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Speaking at a media briefing, Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba condemned the attack, emphasising its broader impact on healthcare services.

“This was not only a violation of the nurses but a direct assault on our healthcare system. Investigations are ongoing, and additional charges will be laid as evidence emerges,” said Ramathuba.

Questions About Security Measures

Ramathuba criticised the security response at Ga-Chuene Clinic, where three guards were overpowered during the attack.

“You can’t have three security guards being overpowered by one person. Even though he had a gun, the female security guard, who was not handcuffed, could have called for help but did not. This raises serious concerns,” she said.

Ramathuba contrasted this incident with a similar situation at Ga-Thaba Clinic, where a guard successfully fought off the same suspect. She called for an investigation into the security lapses at Ga-Chuene.

“Were they asleep when he arrived? We need to delve deeper into this situation to understand what went wrong,” she added.

Psychological support continues to be provided to the affected nurses, while Ga-Chuene Clinic remains temporarily closed. Investigators are working to finalise evidence and identify further charges.
