Sundowns Star And Gogo Maweni’s ‘Bewitched’ Ex, Siyabonga Zulu’ Dies In Horror Crash

South African football has lost another talent. Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Zulu was killed in a car crash in Secunda, Mpumalanga in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Zulu, who was playing for Phezulu FC at the time, was in the vehicle with his teammate Nhlanhla Masina, who also lost his life in the accident. Former Moroka Swallows winger Thabo Mosadi was also involved and remains in critical condition in hospital.

Reports indicate that the crash happened after their team’s match against FC Sivutsa at Driekoppies on Saturday.

Zulu’s Past Resurfaces After His Passing

While fans mourn the loss of the talented 31-year-old, his stormy history with sangoma and reality TV star Gogo Maweni has come back into conversation.

Zulu, who had a son with Maweni, was once accused by her of being an absent father and a reckless partner. But it was her shocking confession in 2022 that has left many uneasy.

During an episode of Podcast and Chill, Maweni openly admitted that she bewitched him, allegedly leading to his downfall in football. “I don’t know how to say this, but honestly, I bewitched him. I had to teach him a lesson.”

According to Maweni, she supported Zulu financially while he was allegedly living the high life and cheating on her. She even claimed to have paid a R45,000 bill he racked up at a club.

Following news of Zulu’s tragic death, social media has been flooded with reactions—some mourning the player’s loss, while others speculating if Maweni’s words were more than just talk.

Another said; “RIP to Zulu, but this one got me feeling uneasy…”

While another person commented: “Gogo Maweni must be investigated, this is too much.”

While no foul play has been reported in the crash, Zulu’s past has added an eerie layer to the tragedy.

Remembering Siyabonga Zulu

Zulu had over 80 professional football appearances and played for multiple clubs, including Platinum Stars, Mamelodi Sundowns, Chippa United, Black Leopards, and All Stars. He was also a Bafana Bafana U23 international.

Despite his talent, off-field controversies overshadowed his career, and many believe he never reached his full potential.

His death is a heartbreaking reminder of the highs and lows of South African football.  Rest in Peace, Siyabonga Zulu.
