Stepfather’s Appeal Rejected After Claiming His Rape Action Not The Worst Kind

A stepfather who was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his stepdaughter for over two years has had his appeal rejected by the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria.

The man, who was found guilty of raping his stepdaughter from the age of 11 to 13, maintained that his sentence was “shockingly inappropriate” and that what he had done did not amount to the “worst kind of rape.”

A History Of Abuse And Manipulation

The court heard how the stepfather would come into the child’s room at night, move her little brother, and then proceed to have sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

The child testified that she was threatened with death if she told anyone, and that her stepfather also threatened to kill her mother if she reported him.

The child’s ordeal only came to an end when her mother discovered her diary entries detailing the abuse.

Victims Trauma And Sentence

The court rejected the stepfather’s appeal, stating that the aggravating factors in the case far outweighed any mitigating factors.

The judges noted that the stepfather had shown no remorse for his actions and that the child had suffered significant emotional and psychological trauma as a result of the abuse.

The court found that a sentence of life imprisonment was proportionate to the crime committed and that the sentence was a just one.
