Stepfather Sentenced To 15 Years For Sexual Grooming, Assault

A 40-year-old stepfather has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for sexual grooming, child pornography, and sexual assault of his 15-year-old stepdaughter.

The incidents occurred between January 1, 2022, and March 9, 2023.

The stepfather’s actions were exposed when the victim confided in her counsellor about the inappropriate messages and advances she received from him.

Sexual Offenders Register And Firearm Ban

The stepfather’s particulars have been added to the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO), and he has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The NRSO is a record of individuals convicted of sexual offences against vulnerable persons, established in 2007 to protect children and the mentally disabled.

The register currently lists over 32,500 convicted offenders, with an additional 10,456 potential entries pending in various courts.

South Africa has implemented various measures to combat child abuse, including the NRSO and the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act.
