Stellenbosch University Students Protest Over Registration Issues

Hundreds of students at Stellenbosch University staged a protest on Thursday, effectively shutting down the institution in response to ongoing registration issues.

The demonstrators moved from faculty to faculty, removing students from lecture rooms and urging them to join the protest. As the march progressed to the Law Faculty, more students joined in, swelling their ranks as they moved through various university buildings.

Addressing the protesters, Student Representative Council (SRC) secretary-general Mzwakhe Bolotina emphasised the importance of unity in their cause. “There must be solidarity. We are not joking here,” he said. The protest also extended to the university’s mess hall, where demonstrators disrupted students who were having their meals.

Moreso, one of the students wearing Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) regalia criticised those who refused to join the protest, calling them “clowns.”

Another protester, who addressed students at the Jan Mouton Learning Centre, stated that “I’m not here to disturb you or your peace. It is very privileged of you to sit here and get a lecture. There are many students out there who are getting deregistered on Friday. All we ask is your support. The year 2025 is going to be our 1994.”

Notably, the demonstration highlights growing frustrations among students over registration-related challenges, with many calling for immediate intervention from university management. Further developments are expected as tensions continue to rise on campus.
