Stellenbosch Deputy Principal Gunned Down On School Grounds In Chilling Targeted Attack

A quiet Friday afternoon at Kayamandi Primary School in Stellenbosch erupted into horror when a lone gunman entered the premises shortly after 1.10pm and fatally shot the deputy principal in what authorities believe was a deliberate, targeted hit.

The 54-year-old educator was sitting under a tree after learners had been dismissed when the attacker approached him, opened fire, and fled the scene.

Stellenbosch Targeted Attack Sparks Shock and Outrage

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has condemned the killing, describing it as a “tragic and deeply disturbing act of violence” carried out inside a school — a place meant to be safe for staff and learners.

Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said counselling and trauma support teams had been dispatched to the school to assist devastated staff members who witnessed the aftermath.

Hammond stressed that initial reports strongly suggest the deputy principal was singled out by the suspect. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the entire school community. We urge law enforcement to ensure the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice,” she said.

Police Launch Murder Investigation as Manhunt Intensifies

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a murder case has been opened and that the shooter is still at large. Officers arrived to find the victim with a fatal gunshot wound, and he was declared dead on the scene by medical personnel.

Twigg said detectives are probing the motive behind the attack and have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app. All reports will be treated anonymously,” he said.
