Springboks Eye History As They Face All Blacks In Eden Park Showdown

The Springboks are bracing themselves for what captain Jesse Kriel has called their “biggest test” as they prepare to take on New Zealand in a Rugby Championship blockbuster at Eden Park, Auckland, on Saturday.

The All Blacks have guarded their fortress for 31 years, boasting an unbeaten streak at the venue. South Africa last tasted victory there 88 years ago, making this clash a chance at rewriting history.

“These are all the games that the guys get extremely excited for. It doesn’t get any bigger than this. I suppose, besides the World Cup … this is what you trained hard for and you worked towards each and every day of your professional career,” Kriel said.

Kriel emphasised the importance of the occasion, noting that the intensity and buzz in rugby-mad New Zealand has only fueled the Springboks’ energy.

“The mood is awesome, the guys are excited – we have had a great week of prep and just looking forward to tomorrow,” he added.

The Bok skipper admitted that while Siya Kolisi remains the team’s official captain, he is ready to step up when called upon. “We are not short in the leadership department,” he explained, making it clear that collective responsibility is key in a game of this magnitude.

Assistant coach Mzwandile Stick reinforced the team’s mindset heading into Saturday’s clash.

“If you want to win the competition, you want to be able to beat the best in the world, which is the All Blacks, the number one team in the world, and we are looking forward to that challenge,” Stick said.
