Springboks Edge Argentina To Defend Rugby Championship Title At Twickenham

The Springboks made history in London on Saturday as they defended the Rugby Championship title for the very first time, sealing a thrilling 29-27 victory over Argentina at a packed Twickenham.

Argentina, bouncing back after last week’s heavy defeat in Durban, put in a spirited display and even led at half-time. But the Boks’ trademark power and second-half surge proved decisive, despite a late Los Pumas try narrowing the scoreboard.

Argentina’s First-Half Fightback Stuns the Boks

Much like their showing in Durban, Los Pumas started strongly. They capitalised on an early yellow card to Springbok centre Canan Moodie, who was sent to the bin after upright contact in a tackle.

The numerical advantage gave Argentina momentum, with wing Bautista Delguy crossing after clever attacking play out wide. Flyhalf Santiago Carreras added two penalties to extend their lead to 13-3.

The Boks responded just before the break when scrum dominance finally told, with Cobus Reinach pouncing on loose ball to score, cutting the deficit to 13-10 at half-time.

SpringBoks Scrum Power Defines the Contest

South Africa’s set-piece dominance was a major factor throughout the game. The Argentine pack struggled to cope, conceding multiple penalties and warnings, yet somehow avoiding a yellow card.

Ox Nche stood out among the front row, as the Bok scrum laid the foundation for key moments. Reinach’s first try came directly from a scrum, while another penalty led to a lineout maul and hooker Malcolm Marx powering over.

“The scrum was unstoppable at times,” noted one analyst, as both Bok front rows completely dismantled their opponents.

True to form, the Boks came alive after the break. Marx muscled over for his second try, before RG Snyman’s offload set up Reinach for his brace. By the 57th minute, South Africa had surged to a commanding 29-13 lead.

Argentina refused to give in, however. Delguy punished a loose Cheslin Kolbe pass for his second try, while Rodrigo Isgro scored after the hooter to reduce the deficit to 29-27.

In the end, it was too little too late, as South Africa celebrated a famous Twickenham win and their first successful Rugby Championship title defence.
