Nigerians In SA Warned To Stay Alert And Not Celebrate Loudly If They Win Semifinal

The Nigerian High Commission had raised concerns about potentially inflammatory comments made by some South Africans against Nigerians living in South Africa.

The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) has expressed its regret over an advisory issued by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria.

The advisory seemed to create unnecessary tension and alarm between South Africans and Nigerians ahead of the semifinal match between the two countries in the African Cup of Nations.

Dirco, however, reassured Nigerian citizens that there was no history of soccer hooliganism among South Africans associated with the outcome of such encounters. The department emphasised that the sports-loving nation of South Africa posed no threat to Nigerian citizens.

Dirco also called on the diplomatic representatives to approach them directly to address any concerns about diplomatic matters, as they have done in the past with similar alarming advisories.
