Sports Minister McKenzie Challenges Deputy Mabe’s Stance On Israel’s Olympic Participation

In a recent turn of events, the government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa witnessed a significant disagreement between Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie and his deputy, Peace Mabe. The subject of contention is Israel’s participation in the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
On Friday, Deputy Minister Peace Mabe issued a statement condemning Israel’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics. She argued that allowing Israel to compete ‘undermines’ the spirit of the Olympics.
Her comments were rooted in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, citing the ‘continued genocide’ against Palestinians and the disregard for lives lost. Mabe’s statement drew parallels with apartheid South Africa, asserting that there can be ‘no normal sport with an abnormal society.’

Contrary to Mabe’s position, Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed his displeasure with the statement.
I shall respond fully in regards to my displeasure about the statement released by Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture Ms Peace Mabe only after the Olympics. I don’t want politics to take centre stage now, this is the time for @OfficialTeamRSA, let’s rally behind them 👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾

On Saturday morning, McKenzie clarified that he did not endorse Mabe’s comments and emphasized that politics should not overshadow the Olympics. He stated, ‘I don’t want politics to take centre stage now, this is the time for Team SA, let’s rally behind them.’
The issue has also garnered international attention. The head of the Palestine Olympic Committee, Jibril Rajoub, criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for allowing Israel to compete, calling it a case of ‘double standards.’
Rajoub’s call for a boycott was rejected by the IOC President, Thomas Bach, reinforcing the divide in global opinions regarding Israel’s participation in the Olympics.
