Boiling Water Horror: SPCA Arrests North West Man For Torturing Rat In Viral Video

The SPCA has condemned a disturbing act of animal cruelty after a man from the North West was arrested for filming himself pouring boiling water on a rat he had captured.

The graphic video, which circulated on social media, sparked outrage and prompted swift action from animal welfare authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

Video of Rat Torture Sparks SPCA Investigation

According to the SPCA, the video shows an unidentified man deliberately torturing a rat trapped inside a cage by pouring boiling water over it. The man is seen laughing and mocking the animal as it desperately tries to escape.

The footage was reportedly shared online for entertainment purposes, drawing widespread condemnation.

In response, the SPCA’s Special Projects Unit launched an investigation and successfully traced the suspect to a town just outside Klerksdorp in the North West Province.

Man Arrested and Charged Under Animals Protection Act

The SPCA confirmed that the man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act (APA) 71 of 1962. He was later released on bail.

Animal welfare activists described the incident as deeply disturbing.

“This was a deliberate act of cruelty carried out for entertainment to be shared online, and it is completely unacceptable,” the SPCA said.

The organisation reiterated that animal abuse, regardless of the species involved, will not be tolerated.

SPCA Warns of Serious Consequences for Animal Abusers

The SPCA has urged members of the public not to share videos depicting animal abuse, but instead to report such content immediately to authorities to allow for rapid intervention.

“The SPCA emphasises that it exists to protect all animals, regardless of their size or species, and will take decisive action whenever cruelty is reported,” the organisation said.

Under the Animals Protection Act, individuals found guilty of animal cruelty may face fines or imprisonment. Offenders can also be prohibited from owning animals and may receive a criminal record.

The organisation further noted that the law also applies to acts that infuriate, terrify or deliberately harm animals.
