Sparks Fly As Sibiya Clashes With Commissioners At Madlanga Inquiry

Tensions boiled over at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on day five of testimony from suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

The atmosphere inside the hearing room turned heated as the suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner fielded questions about his relationship with Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, who is accused of acting as a go-between for him and controversial businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat”.

Sibiya Pushes Back at Commissioner Baloyi

Friction escalated when Madlanga Co-Commissioner Sesi Baloyi pressed Sibiya on aspects of his testimony.

On several occasions, Sibiya objected to her line of questioning, accusing her of trying to steer him toward specific admissions.

Addressing her directly, he said: “Commissioner Baloyi, I’m trying to be fair to you as well, as you are the person that’s here to ask me questions on probe—I must respond. But I’m just asking one favour: that when you ask me a question, allow me to respond and finish as well.”

Baloyi did not retreat. “And you can keep complaining about me,” she responded. “I will ask you my questions.”

The exchange set the tone for what would become an increasingly tense session.

‘The Cat Is Out of the Bag’ Moment

The hearing grew even more strained during an exchange between Sibiya and Evidence Leader Adila Hassim.

The moment followed a quip referencing impalas allegedly bought by Matlala and delivered to Sibiya’s home.

The verbal sparring unfolded in full view of the commission:

Sibiya: “I take it that the cat is already out of the bag.”

Hassim: “Like the impalas?”

Sibiya: “You see? I don’t want to say she is being arrogant.”

Hassim: “I was just making a joke.”

Sibiya: “No, but you started it. Chair, we need to really respect each other and try to be modest with one another in a platform like this, and be professional.”

The sharp exchange drew attention as the commission continued probing alleged links between senior police officials and Matlala.

Focus Remains on Alleged Police–Tender Links
