Soweto Young Mom Shot In Head And Dumped In Veld After Job Celebration

A night meant for celebration ended in unimaginable terror when two Soweto women were abducted, shot and dumped in an open veld — leaving one dead and the other fighting for her life in a Johannesburg hospital.

Mother Shot in the Head and Left for Dead

Messina Moremi, a 30-year-old mother of two, is clinging to life in the intensive care unit after being shot twice in the head. Her friend, Promise Gadebe, was killed in the same attack.

The pair had reportedly gone out on Friday evening to celebrate Messina securing new employment. They never returned home.

The next morning, their bodies were discovered in an open veld in Protea Glen Extension 8, Soweto. Gadebe died at the scene. Messina, miraculously still breathing, was rushed to hospital.

According to Messina’s devastated mother, Thelma, her daughter had just received good news the day before:
“She was told she would start training for the job on Tuesday. She was so excited… she didn’t deserve this.”

A doctor later told the family that the bullets had damaged her brain on both sides.
“He said it would be a miracle if she’s still with us by Saturday,” Thelma said through tears.

‘When Is Mommy Coming Back?’

Messina’s two children, aged eight and five, are struggling to understand why their mother isn’t home. “We’re afraid to tell them,” Thelma said.

“The older one asks, ‘When is mommy coming back?’ We told her that she’s sick and in hospital.”

The agony extends to Gadebe’s family, who are still making their way from Zimbabwe after receiving the news of her death.

Another Woman Found Dead in Soweto 

The horrific attack on the two friends comes as yet another woman was murdered in Soweto over the same weekend.

Lebogang Sikwane, a mother of three, was found beaten to death near a school in Meadowlands.
Her brother Thomas said the violence she endured was clear:

“Her appearance showed she had fought for her life. She had been badly beaten. There was an open wound on her forehead… maybe that’s what killed her.”

The suspect — a local tailor known to the community — has reportedly fled.

In a haunting moment, Sikwane’s nine-year-old son arrived at the scene despite attempts to stop him.
“He saw his mother lying there and cried uncontrollably. That image will haunt him forever,” Thomas said.

GBV Crisis Reaches Boiling Point

South Africa continues to bleed under the weight of gender-based violence, with these cases adding to dozens reported across the country in recent weeks.

Women for Change, an anti-GBV organisation, is mobilising for a national shutdown next week ahead of the G20 Summit, demanding that the government declare GBV a national disaster.

Their petition states: “Until South Africa stops burying a woman every 2.5 hours, the G20 cannot speak of growth and progress.”

Gauteng police say a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened in the Protea Glen attack, while an arrest has been made in the Meadowlands case.

As the families wait for justice, Thelma asks a question that echoes across the country:
“How long will our daughters keep dying like this? Are they now targeting them in pairs?”
