Soweto Teacher Granted R2K Bail After Lashing Pupil 92 Times Over Essay Word Count

A teacher from Soweto has been released on bail after appearing in court on allegations that she severely assaulted a Grade 11 pupil at school.

Mpho Ramapatsi briefly appeared before the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where she faces a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court granted her bail of R2,000. The case relates to an incident at Tetelo Secondary School involving a 16-year-old learner.

Essay Assignment Allegedly Led to Harsh Punishment

According to allegations presented in court, Ramapatsi used a pipe to lash the pupil 92 times.

The incident reportedly followed an essay assignment in which the learner had been instructed to write 150 words but submitted a piece containing 308 words.

It is alleged that the teacher punished the pupil by administering one lash for every extra word written beyond the required limit.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Teacher Appears in Court Wearing Niqab

During her court appearance, Ramapatsi wore a niqab, revealing only her eyes. A niqab is a veil worn by Muslim women that covers the face while leaving the eyes visible.

The case has been postponed while investigations continue.

Ramapatsi is expected to return to the Protea Magistrate’s Court on 8 April 2026.
