Soweto Shootout: Four Killed, Two Arrested During Foiled Armed Robbery In Mofolo

Police operations in Soweto ended in a deadly confrontation after officers intercepted a group of suspects allegedly planning an armed robbery. The incident unfolded in the iKwezi area near Mofolo, where law enforcement moved in following intelligence about a looming attack on a business premises.

Members of the Hawks’ Tactical Operation Management Section worked alongside Badboyz private security and the Gauteng Police Highway Patrol during the operation, which quickly escalated into a gun battle.

Police Intelligence Leads to Planned Robbery Interception in Soweto

Authorities had received information suggesting that a group of suspects were preparing to carry out a robbery at a local business. Acting on the tip-off, officers monitored the area and soon spotted vehicles matching the descriptions linked to the planned crime.

According to Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, police approached the suspects near the targeted premises before the situation escalated.

“The team picked up the described vehicles near the intended target where the robbery was set to take place.”

High-Speed Chase Ends in Deadly Gunfight

When the suspects realised that law enforcement officers were monitoring them, they attempted to escape in different vehicles. Police immediately launched a pursuit, which quickly developed into a violent confrontation.

“Upon realisation that police were observing, the suspects split and fled into their vehicles.”

The chase soon turned into a shootout between the suspects and the security forces. During the exchange of gunfire, four suspects were fatally wounded.

Two Arrested as Police Hunt for Seventh Suspect

While four suspects died during the gunfight, two others were apprehended at the scene. They are expected to appear in court soon to face multiple charges linked to the planned robbery.

“However, the police gave chase and a shootout ensued, resulting in four fatalities, whilst two other suspects were arrested.”

The suspects in custody will face charges including business robbery, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms.

Police say efforts are continuing to track down the remaining suspect who managed to escape during the pursuit.
