Soweto Rapist Sentenced To Two Life Terms For Raping Three Women While On Parole

A shocking case of repeat offenses has shaken Soweto. Albert Beukes, a 39-year-old convicted rapist, received two life sentences and additional penalties from the Protea Magistrate’s Court after committing three rapes while on parole. This case highlights significant concerns around the parole system in South Africa.

A String of Heinous Crimes

Beukes’s crimes spanned years, beginning in December 2014, when he attacked a 29-year-old woman walking home from a tavern in Eldorado Park. The victim, abducted to an open veld, courageously reported the assault, but the case went unsolved until years later when DNA evidence linked Beukes to the crime.

In April 2016, another woman fell victim under eerily similar circumstances. Beukes struck again in February 2019, targeting a 47-year-old woman in her Kliptown shack, Soweto. The attack was interrupted when a passerby heard her screams, but Beukes fled, leaving behind incriminating clothing that was later identified by his wife.

Beukes’s trail of crimes persisted despite his parole for a prior 12-year sentence for rape. Authorities finally apprehended him during a scheduled visit with his parole officer in July 2019. DNA evidence sealed his fate, linking him to multiple unsolved cases.

Justice Served For Soweto Victims

As South Africa observes 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Beukes’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the justice system’s role in protecting vulnerable groups. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane praised the work of Captain Smith and Prosecutor Edward Madibela, who described Beukes as a serial predator exploiting the vulnerability of women near taverns.

“This case is a culmination of years of thorough investigative and prosecutorial work,” Mjonondwane said.

Beukes was sentenced to two life terms for the 2014 and 2016 rapes, 15 years imprisonment for the 2019 rape, and 18 months imprisonment for kidnapping.
