Soweto Child Dies From Suspected Food Poisoning

The Gauteng Department of Education has tragically confirmed the death of a grade 6 pupil from Thobeka Primary School in Soweto, following a suspected food poisoning incident.

The child, who last attended school on Friday, November 1st, exhibited no signs of illness prior to her hospitalization over the weekend.

Details Surrounding the Case

According to spokesperson Steve Mabona, the learner purchased snacks from a street vendor in Soweto, with reports indicating she did not acquire any food from the school’s premises.

On Monday following the purchase, the child was absent from school, and her parent reported her hospitalization due to what was suspected to be a foodborne illness.

Status of Other Students

In a separate, yet concerning event, 21 pupils from Vuyani Primary School in Tsakane were hospitalized for similar symptoms.

These learners reportedly began experiencing stomach cramps shortly after their school break on the same day. Thankfully, all affected students were discharged later the same afternoon and are now in good health.

Mabona assured that the department is closely collaborating with health officials to conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents. The well-being of learners remains the utmost priority, and measures to safeguard their health are being actively pursued.
