South Africa’s ICT Sector Set For Major Policy Talks As Government Signals Reform Push

Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi has announced that the government is ready to engage on major reforms in South Africa’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.
The aim is to create policy certainty that encourages private sector investment.
To facilitate these discussions, Malatsi is hosting a policy colloquium in Pretoria, bringing together industry leaders, regulators, academics, and civil society representatives.
SABC Funding Model and Policy Processes on the Agenda
The government’s talks come amid several ongoing policy processes, including deliberations on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) funding model. The outcome of these discussions is expected to shape the sector’s direction for years to come.
ICT: Malatsi Pledges Purposeful Engagement and Action
Speaking at the colloquium, Malatsi emphasised the government’s commitment to genuine engagement.
“Many of you whom I’ve spoken to since beginning this journey have expressed the need for truly meaningful engagement and involvement in playing a role towards this sector and how, from a policy perspective, we can stay in the right direction.”
Acknowledging past scepticism among stakeholders, he added:
“I know because often the government convinces these gatherings that there may be some scepticism because many of you have participated in engagements probably similar like this before that may have not led to the action that you thought it would lead to.”
