South Africa’s Exclusion From This Month’s G20 Sherpa Meeting Fuels New Fears About US–Pretoria Relations

South Africa’s absence from this month’s G20 Sherpa meeting in the United States has raised fresh concerns about the country’s ability to shape upcoming global discussions.

The meeting is a key platform where member nations influence agendas and follow up on decisions made during summits.

According to Professor Christopher Isike, director of the African Centre for the Study of the United States at the University of Pretoria, South Africa’s exclusion means it “will be unable to shape or influence important agendas or advance decisions reached at the recent Summit held in Johannesburg.”

He shared his views during an interview with SABC News.

International Relations spokesperson Chrispin Phiri maintains that South Africa remains fully committed to the G20. He emphasised that “as a founding member, South Africa’s commitment to the G20’s principles and collaborative framework remains steadfast.”

G20 Delegation Divide Underscores Policy Tensions

Phiri added that all member states recognise that “the strength and legitimacy of the forum derive from its established composition and shared adherence to its founding protocols.”

However, tensions between South Africa and the United States have been building over differences in both domestic and foreign policy.

After Johannesburg Summit, Rift Deepens

The strain became evident when US President Donald Trump did not attend last month’s G20 Summit hosted in Johannesburg. Shortly after the event, South Africa formally handed over the G20 presidency to the US.

Trump shared on his Truth Social platform that he will not be inviting South Africa to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami. He justified the move by alleging “horrific Human Rights Abuses” against white South Africans.

Trump wrote, “The United States did not attend the G20 in South Africa, because the South African Government refuses to acknowledge or address the horrific Human Right Abuses endured by Afrikaners, and other descendants of Dutch, French, and German settlers.

“To put it more bluntly, they are killing white people, and randomly allowing their farms to be taken from them.”

He also blamed the media for not supporting these allegations, adding:

“Perhaps, worst of all, the soon to be out of business New York Times and the Fake News Media won’t issue a word against this genocide. That’s why all the Liars and Pretenders of the Radical Left Media are going out of business!

“At the conclusion of the G20, South Africa refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a Senior Representative from our U.S. Embassy, who attended the Closing Ceremony,” he wrote.

He then announced that South Africa would be barred from the 2026 summit, “Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.”

Trump went even further, declaring that the US would halt financial support to Pretoria, “South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced last week that he plans to press Trump to reconsider his decision to bar South Africa from the 2026 G20 summit in Florida.

“I will try, in my conversations and meetings with the American president… to convince him that it would be good to invite all members of the G20 to America,” Merz told reporters in Berlin.

Merz also expressed disappointment over the absence of the US at the Johannesburg summit, calling the G20 “one of the most important multilateral formats we still have in the world”. He warned that alienating South Africa was not in Washington’s strategic interest.

“The American government is needlessly relinquishing influence, including influence in a part of the world that is becoming increasingly important,” he said.
