South African Ministries Distance Themselves From SANDF Chief’s Comments In Iran

General Rudzani Maphwanya met with senior Iranian military officials on Tuesday, expressing enthusiasm about future collaborations between South Africa and Iran.

“This trip is not only a military one, but has a political message and was carried out at the best possible time to express our heartfelt feelings to the peace-loving nation of Iran,” Maphwanya was quoted as saying by Iranian state media.

During the visit, the SANDF chief toured Iran’s defence research and training facility, Dafoos, praising its capabilities.

“Dafoos possesses highly advanced academic capabilities, and we are truly enthusiastic about fostering military cooperation with this university,” he stated.

Defence Ministry’s Swift Clarification

In a statement released on Wednesday night, the Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans stressed that Maphwanya’s remarks did not reflect its official position.

“The Ministry of Defence and Military Veterans wishes to clarify that matters of South Africa’s foreign policy and international relations are the sole prerogative of the president and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco),” the ministry said.

It further noted that it “does not make political or policy decisions” on relationships with foreign states, adding that General Maphwanya will be engaged upon his return to South Africa.

Dirco Reaffirms Presidency’s Role in Foreign Policy

Dirco also released a statement on Wednesday night, reinforcing that the country’s foreign policy decisions lie with the Presidency, supported by the department.

“It is crucial to clarify that the implementation of South Africa’s foreign policy is a function of the Presidency, supported by Dirco,” said spokesperson Crispin Phiri.

“Any statements made by an individual, or a department other than those responsible for foreign policy, should not be misinterpreted as the official position of the South African government.”

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ronald Lamola will be seeking further clarification on the matter.
