South Africa Tourism Booms As International Arrivals Surge By 1.3 Million In 2025

South Africa’s tourism sector is enjoying a powerful upswing, with new data revealing a sharp increase in international arrivals. The Department of Tourism confirmed on Tuesday that the country’s recovery is not only intact but accelerating aggressively.

Between January and October 2025, South Africa welcomed 8.56 million visitors — a remarkable 1.3 million more than the same period in 2024. Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lille said the figures show the industry has re-established itself as a key economic driver.

“Tourism is proving itself a catalyst of economic growth and development. The industry is creating jobs, stimulating investment, and revitalising local economies,” she said.

October 2025 alone delivered an impressive 927,426 arrivals, a 32% rise compared to October 2024, marking one of the strongest October performances on record. This comes after a robust September, which saw 846,367 visitors — a 26.9% jump from the previous year.

Regional Markets Drive Strong Tourism Growth in 2025

From January to September 2025, international tourist arrivals reached 7,634,261 — an increase of 1,108,222 year-on-year. De Lille credited the momentum to industry-wide collaboration, improved travel processes, new airline routes, and enhanced overall competitiveness.

“We are now in a period of sustained growth. These numbers reflect the hard work of our industry partners, the improved ease of travel, enhanced air access, and our continued focus on service excellence and new tourism experiences. South Africa is becoming more competitive, and visitors are responding,” she said.

De Lille also extended her gratitude to the nation’s 1.8 million tourism workers: “To all the dedicated tourism workers across the country, thank you for your commitment. You are the heartbeat of this sector, and this growth is a testament to your resilience and professionalism.”

Regional performance highlights included:

Africa (land markets): +26.7%

Africa (air markets): +28%, led by DRC (+58%), Kenya (+27%), and Nigeria (+42%)

Europe: +29%, with strong contributions from the UK (+35%) and Germany (+31%)

North America: +22%, boosted by Canada’s 47% surge and the USA’s +18%

Asia: +11%

Middle East: +58%

South Africa Gears Up for Festive Season Tourism Peak

Looking ahead to the December peak season, De Lille said the country is prepared to deliver memorable experiences to global travellers. “South Africa is ready to welcome the world this festive season with open arms, warm smiles, and world-class experiences.”

She encouraged South Africans to maintain the nation’s welcoming spirit. She called on citizens to “continue showing the spirit of Ubuntu and hospitality that defines our nation” to ensure every visitor feels at home.

Government officials reiterated their commitment to growing a sustainable and inclusive tourism sector, noting the sector’s strengthened international reputation following the successful hosting of the recent G20 Leaders’ Summit.
