South Africa Sees 3.1% Drop In Contact Crimes In Q2 2025, Police Statistics Reveal

Police have reported a decline in contact crimes for the period between July and September 2025, marking a 3.1% decrease compared to the same quarter in 2024.
Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia released the latest national crime statistics in Pretoria on Friday morning, highlighting shifts across key crime categories.
While murder, assault, and robbery have all recorded notable reductions, the quarter also saw increases in attempted murder and sexual offences, reflecting mixed progress in crime trends.

According to the statistics, police recorded just over 155,000 contact crimes between July and September 2025, compared to more than 160,000 during the same period the previous year.
The lowest figure in the past five years was in 2021, when slightly over 137,000 cases were reported in the second quarter.

Carjackings, along with commercial and residential robberies, have dropped significantly—showing a combined decline of 15%. Police view this as evidence of progress in targeted crime-prevention measures.
Sexual Offences and GBV Remain a Deep Concern
Despite the overall downward shift, Cachalia warned that unlawful activity levels remain unacceptably high and stressed the persistence of certain worrying categories.
“There are categories that remain stubbornly high. We are continuing to record increases in sexual offences, gender-based violence and commercial crimes, which is a trend over the last five years,” he said.
Although reported cases of rape and sexual assault experienced slight declines, the broader category of sexual offences rose due to increases in attempted sexual offences and contact sexual offences.
