South Africa Secures Duty-Free Export Access To China In Landmark Economic Partnership Deal

South Africa has taken a major step in strengthening its trade relationship with China after the two countries signed the China-Africa Economic Partnership Agreement, a deal that grants South African exports duty-free entry into the Chinese market.

The agreement was formalised in Beijing during a joint economic and trade commission meeting, with Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Parks Tau signing on behalf of South Africa alongside China’s Minister of Commerce, Wang Wentao.

The deal is expected to unlock new investment flows into South Africa while deepening bilateral trade ties, particularly in priority sectors identified by both governments.

China-Africa Economic Partnership Expands Trade and Investment

The framework agreement spans trade, investment, new energy and multilateral cooperation, signalling a broad-based commitment to economic collaboration between the two nations.

Both countries have agreed to expand bilateral trade, with a specific focus on increasing Chinese market access for South African agricultural products such as citrus and rooibos tea.

The duty-free access is expected to improve competitiveness for South African exporters and create new growth opportunities.

Focus Shifts to Implementation and Industrial Growth

Minister Tau said the emphasis now moves to ensuring the agreement delivers tangible benefits for South African businesses and industries.

“Those implementation measures would include early harvest initiatives, investment in industrialisation in South Africa, agreements on standards and regulations to facilitate ease of access into the Chinese market and investment in South Africa. But they also include opportunities for South African companies,” he added.

The implementation phase will be critical in translating the framework into practical outcomes, particularly in supporting industrialisation, easing regulatory barriers and attracting long-term investment.
