SA Pays Tribute To Cyclist And Security Officer David Sejobe, “Death Knocked On Our Door,”

South Africans gathered in solemn remembrance on Saturday as family, friends and colleagues laid to rest security officer and cyclist David Sejobe in Limpopo.
Sejobe, 49, was described as a man whose presence brought comfort and warmth to those around him. His funeral took place at Mukondeni Village, where mourners travelled from across the country to honour his life and legacy.
He died after being struck by a vehicle in what police are investigating as a suspected hit-and-run incident while he was cycling to work along the Golden Highway in Gauteng.
Funeral tributes honour David Sejobe’s kindness and service
Sejobe was widely known for his friendly greetings at the MultiChoice headquarters in Randburg, where he worked as a security officer. Those gestures, many said, left a lasting impression on staff and visitors alike.
The funeral venue filled to capacity as mourners gathered to pay their final respects. A family representative, Sephitjo Seboje, welcomed attendees but struggled to continue as emotion overtook him.
“Death knocked on our door,” he said.
“We were informed by police officers and security guards that our beloved one had been hit by a vehicle on the road,” he added, before breaking down in grief.
Calls for cyclist safety after hit-and-run tragedy
Nonhlanhla Dlala, speaking on behalf of Fidelity Services Group CEO Wahl Bartmann, delivered a tribute that reflected Sejobe’s impact on those around him.
“Today we gather with heavy hearts to honour a man whose kindness, warmth and spirit touched every life he crossed. David was not just a security officer.”

“He was a light. He had a smile that lifted tired souls, a gentle voice that reminded us that joy is something we give freely.”
Dlala said Sejobe’s life was defined by service and compassion, and urged the public to reflect on road safety.

“As we honour him, as we mourn, let us also raise awareness about cycling.”
“David’s love for cycling was part of his identity, and his loss reminds us how important it is to protect every cyclist on our roads. May his story inspire us to slow down, look out for one another and value every life on our streets.”
“To the family, may you find comfort in knowing that the nation mourns with you. To David, thank you for the light you shed. Your spirit will live in every smile you inspire and in every life you touch. May your beautiful soul rest in peace.”
EFF renews criticism of security industry oversight
On Friday, IOL reported that the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng gathered at the MultiChoice Group head offices in Randburg to honour Sejobe’s life.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the party described him as a hardworking and dedicated employee who supported his family under difficult conditions within the private security sector.

The EFF reiterated its long-standing call for the insourcing of security guards, arguing that outsourcing leads to exploitation and denies workers critical benefits.

“The treatment of security guards is a reflection of systemic injustices that must be addressed,” the statement read.
The party also criticised the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), alleging it has failed to protect workers and secure their pension funds. The EFF urged the motorist involved in the incident to come forward and assist police.
“The Sejobe family deserves answers and closure,” the statement said.
Members of the public were also asked to share any information that could help identify the driver involved.
