South Africa Bids Farewell To Soli Philander As Funeral Details Confirmed

South Africans will soon have the chance to pay their final respects to veteran entertainer Soli Philander after his family confirmed details of his upcoming funeral.
Philander’s funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, 14 March 2026 at 11am at the New Apostolic Church Silvertown Congregation on Durant Road in Athlone, Cape Town.
Following the service, a private cremation will take place. The ceremony will also be streamed online so that supporters and admirers across the country can join the farewell.
Philander died on Wednesday, 4 March at the age of 65, prompting widespread tributes from across the entertainment industry and beyond.
Soli Philander Funeral Service Details In Cape Town
The announcement of the funeral arrangements comes days after the death of the respected actor, comedian and presenter.
Philander was widely known for his work across theatre, television, radio and film, building a reputation as one of South Africa’s distinctive voices in comedy and storytelling.
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie confirmed his passing earlier this week and paid tribute to the veteran entertainer.
“I learnt with deep sadness tonight of the passing of Soli Philander, one of South Africa’s most beloved entertainers, storytellers and cultural voices,” McKenzie said.
“For decades, Soli Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country.”
Tributes Pour In From South African Entertainment Industry
Philander, who grew up in Elsies River in Cape Town, built a career that resonated strongly with audiences, particularly through humour inspired by life on the Cape Flats.
Award-winning comedian Marc Lottering recalled the impact of seeing Philander perform during his early years. “I was still a law student when I remember seeing Soli on stage. Soli had created a character called Rosie September,” Lottering said.
“I was blown away to witness such skill, such intellect, such authenticity and such an ability to make a packed theatre roar with laughter.”

Actress Lizz Meiring also reflected on Philander’s ability to captivate audiences. “A very talented man with good comedy timing and a gift for characterisation,” she said.
Actress Vinette Ebrahim remembered Philander as both fearless and outspoken. “Soli was an amazing person, intelligent, fiery and fearless. He took on the world and the authorities without fear. I will miss him because he was just an extraordinary person.”
Singer Bianca Le Grange also shared her memories of the late entertainer. “He welcomed me with open arms, sharing his humour and inspiration,” she said, adding that his wit and unmistakable Cape spirit would be deeply missed.
Soli Philander’s Career Across Television, Theatre And Film
Over the years, Philander became a familiar face on South African television and radio.
Audiences remember him from programmes including Liriekeraai, Off the Record, and the South African edition of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
He was also recognised by younger viewers for his role as Timothy Traddle on the children’s educational television show Kideo.
Born and raised in Elsies River, Philander’s career spanned decades and included appearances in productions such as Arendsvlei as well as films like The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island.
He is survived by his sons Caleb and Ethan, and daughters Danya and Kyla.
