South Africa And Nigeria Strengthen Migration And Security Cooperation After High-Level Abuja Talks

South Africa and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger cooperation on migration, crime prevention and regional security following high-level discussions held in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola, acting as Special Envoy for President Cyril Ramaphosa, delivered an official message from the South African President to Nigerian President Bola Tinubu during the meeting.

The talks formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, with both delegations addressing a range of shared security and law enforcement matters.

South Africa And Nigeria Focus On Migration And Crime Cooperation

Among the key issues discussed were organised crime and attacks on law enforcement officers during crime-fighting operations.

The delegations also reviewed developments relating to the processing and arrest of more than 500 Nigerian nationals in South Africa.

Lamola clarified that the actions taken by South African authorities are based on evidence and directed at individuals suspected of criminal activity rather than the wider Nigerian community living lawfully in the country.

Bilateral Talks Reaffirm Commitment To Diplomacy And Regional Security

During the discussions, Lamola also reiterated South Africa’s zero-tolerance stance on xenophobic violence.

Both governments agreed to continue addressing common challenges through diplomatic engagement while expanding cooperation on security matters to strengthen regional stability.
