South Africa And EU Strengthen Trade And Energy Partnership At G20 Summit

South Africa has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering political and economic relations with the European Union following high-level talks on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.
President Cyril Ramaphosa met with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday at the Sandton Convention Centre.
The engagement follows on from the South Africa–EU Summit held in Cape Town earlier this year, with leaders reviewing progress on a range of joint initiatives.
Clean Energy and Mineral Value Chains Take Centre Stage
Central to the discussions was the newly signed EU–South Africa Clean Trade and Investment Partnership, which is expected to stimulate fresh investment in clean energy and bolster cooperation around decarbonisation efforts.
A second agreement dedicated to strengthening sustainable mineral and metal value chains aims to advance local beneficiation and support greater industrial integration. Both sides also welcomed the launch of the South Africa–EU Energy Dialogue, agreeing to upgrade it to ministerial level in 2026.
Trade expansion also featured strongly, with plans outlined to streamline market access for animal and plant products between the two partners.
