Soshanguve Pupils Protest After Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Teachers

Learners at Tiyelelani Secondary School in Soshanguve staged protests this week, accusing teachers of sexual abuse and demanding immediate action. The demonstrations erupted on Monday after pupils claimed the school principal failed to act urgently when the allegations surfaced.

Pupils’ Protest Led to Education Department Removing Teachers and Principal

On Wednesday, officials from the Gauteng Department of Education visited the school to investigate the allegations. Three teachers identified as suspects were removed from their posts, along with the school principal.

Outraged parents are demanding stricter measures in the hiring and vetting of teachers. Parent Queen Ngwenya voiced her frustration:

“The teacher accused of the crime must be fired and arrested because this is a crime. An older teacher can never be said to be dating a learner, that is what grooming is, because the learner does not know better.”

The department met with parents, teachers, political parties, and civil rights groups to address the crisis. EFF deputy chairperson Phillip Makwala stressed the importance of accountability:

“We must be honest that as much as we want education to resume, but at the centre of that education, the injustice that has been committed must be confronted.”

After the meeting, it was resolved that pupils should return to class on Wednesday while investigations continue.
