SolarAfrica Secures R1.8 Billion Investment To Power South Africa’s Renewable Energy Future

SolarAfrica has obtained a hefty R1.8 billion investment to advance its flagship utility-scale solar project, SunCentral, in an important move to strengthen South Africa’s renewable energy environment.
This breakthrough marks a significant turning point in the company’s goal to increase the use of clean energy nationwide by utilising electricity wheeling as a strategic tool to provide sustainable power solutions to the commercial and industrial sectors.

Background on Electricity Wheeling
Electricity wheeling is a practice that allows businesses to purchase renewable power from independent power producers (IPPs) like SolarAfrica through the existing grid. Through the signing of wheeling agreements that can span from five to twenty-five years, this strategy allows businesses to avoid traditional utility suppliers like Eskom.
These contracts provide a steady and affordable supply of green energy while giving companies the freedom to increase their energy usage following their expansion requirements. In South Africa, wheeling has grown in relevance as a strategy to lessen the difficulties brought on by frequent load shedding and rising electricity prices.
Wheeling supports a willing buyer/willing seller model by enabling the transmission of privately generated electricity across the national grid, improving energy security, and fostering sustainable development.

SolarAfrica’s SunCentral Project
SunCentral is a large-scale solar photovoltaic plant that will be built in three stages in the Northern Cape, between Hanover and De Aar. Through a phased implementation of three 114 MW reactors, the first phase will provide 342 MW of renewable energy.

In addition to offering clean energy to a wide variety of off-takers, this project will also supply wheeling on a one-to-many basis, making it available to a larger pool of South African businesses. The first 114 MW component of SunCentral has reached financial close with the R1.8 billion investment, which was obtained in collaboration with finance partners Investec and RMB.
In light of the nation’s energy transformation, the commercial and industrial sectors are increasingly looking for cost-effectiveness and pricing stability, and this achievement demonstrates SolarAfrica’s dedication to developing sustainable energy solutions for them.

Impact and Future Prospects
Scaling Renewable Energy: By expanding clean energy capacity, SolarAfrica contributes significantly to South Africa’s goal of increasing more renewable sources in its energy mix. The project aligns with the country’s need for up to 30 GW of new capacity by 2030 to meet climate commitments and energy demands.
Economic Benefits: The construction and operation of SunCentral will create jobs and stimulate local economies, contributing to South Africa’s economic growth and development.
Innovation in Wheeling: A single-generation plant may help several enterprises, according to SolarAfrica’s one-to-many wheeling concept, which takes a more inclusive approach. This invention boosts the accessibility of green energy, assisting a greater range of sectors in their transition to sustainable power sources.
“The construction of SolarAfrica’s SunCentral is a critical step in our journey to expand clean energy adoption across Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Paul van Zijl, group CEO of Starsight Energy Africa Group. “We are excited to move this project forward and continue delivering long-term value to our customers.”
