Siyanda Mvelase To Be Laid To Rest In KZN After Brutal Soweto E-Hailing Attack

Three weeks after his brutal death in Soweto, e-hailing driver Siyanda Mthokozisi Mvelase is finally being laid to rest. His funeral will take place on Saturday, September 6, in the Nhlungwane area of Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal.

Speaking to IOL News, his aunt Zanele Khuzwayo confirmed the arrangements: “The body will be transported to KZN today, with SANTACO working alongside Icebo Lethu Funeral Parlour, because we are burying him tomorrow.”

SANTACO had earlier pledged to help the family by ensuring his remains were transported from Gauteng to KZN.

Deadly Soweto Attack Linked to Taxi and E-Hailing Tensions

Mvelase was shot and burned alive at Maponya Mall in Soweto on August 13, in what authorities believe was part of the ongoing conflict between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers.

According to police, his vehicle was ambushed by four armed men who opened fire before setting it alight. Another nearby vehicle was also targeted, leaving its driver and a passerby injured. Both victims were rushed to hospital.

Police confirmed a case of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and arson has been opened, but no arrests have been made.

Siyanda Mvelase’s Family Demands Justice

The tragedy struck just two days after Mvelase started his e-hailing job, having bought his car only two weeks earlier.

His death has left his family shattered. Mvelase was his mother’s only child, and the devastating news led to her hospitalisation.

“She is doing better now and has since been discharged from the hospital,” said Khuzwayo.

Khuzwayo also revealed the family has not received any updates from police about suspects or arrests.

“They told us to focus on the burial for now and said they would update us after the funeral,” she said.

The family managed to raise financial support through community appeals and will finally lay him to rest this weekend.
