Six Villagers Arrested For Beating To Death Man Accused Of Theft

Police in Limpopo have strongly condemned the escalating cases of vigilantism in the province.

This is coming after the brutal murder of a 33-year-old man in Itsani Matieni village, located in the Vhembe district.

The incident, which saw the victim, Mudau Phathutshedzo, being beaten to death by a group of community members, has sparked outrage.

The police have emphasized the need for communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and urged them to report any criminal activities directly to the authorities.

Arrests Made Following Mob Justice Attack In Itsani Matieni Village

Following a detailed investigation into the mob justice incident, six suspects were arrested on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

Among those arrested were two women and four men, ranging from 32 to 51 years of age.

The arrested persons were members of the community who took matters into their own hands, accusing the victim of theft.

The mob destroyed a house to apprehend Phathutshedzo before dragging him to a nearby sports field, where he was assaulted until police arrived.

Unfortunately, he was declared dead at the scene.

Police Chief Calls For Zero Tolerance Towards Vigilantism

Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed satisfaction over those arrested, emphasizing the need to set an example against vigilante justice.

“These arrests will send a strong message that vigilantism will not be tolerated.

“We urge all community members to report any criminal activities to law enforcement and allow the justice system to take its course,” Hadebe said.
