Six Suspects Nabbed After Truck Hijacking Foiled In R500K Meat Heist

A joint police operation spanning multiple units and provinces has resulted in the arrest of six suspects believed to be behind the hijacking of a truck transporting meat worth over R500,000.

North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed that the multidisciplinary operation included the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, Drug Task Team, Tactical Response Team (TRT) Klerksdorp, and several private security companies.

Acting on intelligence about a planned hijacking, police teams swooped in moments after the truck was seized in Potchefstroom, successfully recovering the stolen vehicle and its cargo.

“Taking swift action, the combined forces moved in on the suspects moments after the truck was seized. In addition to recovering the hijacked vehicle, the authorities confiscated three other vehicles allegedly used in the crime,” said Myburgh.

Suspects Facing Hijacking and Kidnapping Charges

The six suspects, aged between 28 and 48, were detained and are expected to appear in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on Monday on charges of hijacking and kidnapping.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo commended the seamless cooperation between law enforcement units and private security partners.

“This operation is a testament to our commitment to combat crime effectively through collaboration,” said Naidoo.

Police have reaffirmed their zero-tolerance approach to organised hijackings and urged the public to continue assisting with tip-offs to dismantle criminal networks targeting transport and logistics vehicles across the region.
