Six SAPS Officers Arrested For Alleged Shebeen Break-In And Liquor Theft In Mfuleni

Six members of the South African Police Service have been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged break-in and theft at a shebeen in Mfuleni, Cape Town.

The officers, made up of one sergeant and five constables, were arrested on Monday following an investigation by the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit.

They were expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday on charges of housebreaking and theft.

SAPS Officers Accused Of Stealing Liquor From Mfuleni Shebeen

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed the arrests and said the officers were between the ages of 25 and 36.

“This office can confirm that six members, including a sergeant and five constables aged between 25 and 36, were arrested by members of the Western Cape Anti-Corruption Unit on Monday, 25 May 2026, on a warrant of arrest for charges of housebreaking and theft at Mfuleni SAPS,” Van Wyk said.

“They appeared at Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court [on Tuesday 26 May 2026] for the charges mentioned.”

It is alleged the officers entered the premises by climbing through a window before leaving with several bottles of alcohol.

Authorities further allege that the liquor was never officially booked in as evidence.

Arrests Come Amid Concerns Over Police Corruption

The arrests come days after reports revealed that 164 police officers had been convicted of crimes over the past decade, including murder and attempted murder, while some remained employed within SAPS.

Nicholas Gotsell previously raised concerns about disciplinary processes within the police service and called for investigations into unresolved cases involving officers.

The latest incident has once again placed the spotlight on allegations of corruption and criminal conduct within law enforcement.

IPID Reports More Than 80 Criminal Convictions

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said it had secured 85 criminal convictions as of 31 March 2026.

According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, many of the convictions related to serious offences, including deaths linked to police action, assault and rape cases.

Police investigations into the Mfuleni matter are continuing.
