Six Milnerton High School Pupils Face The Axe After School Assault Incident

The educational future of six Milnerton High School learners hangs in the balance as the school’s governing body moves to expel them following a series of violent assault charges.

The group, consisting of eight pupils in total, returned to the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Tuesday for their second appearance. While the legal system processes the criminal charges, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has confirmed that the internal disciplinary process has already reached a definitive and stern conclusion for the majority of those involved.

Milnerton High School Governing Body Recommends Expulsion

Following an intensive internal hearing, the school’s disciplinary committee determined that the severity of the allegations warranted the ultimate academic sanction. Each of the eight students faced eight counts of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that the recommendation for the permanent removal of six students has been officially logged. The final decision now rests with the provincial education authorities.

“The recommendation documents were sent to the WCED last week and will now be considered by the head of department of the Western Cape Education Department,” Hammond stated.

Grade 12 Pupils at Risk: The Impact on Matriculants

The timing of the disciplinary action is particularly significant for those involved. According to the department, the group facing the harshest penalties is largely comprised of senior students.

Hammond revealed that five of the six learners currently facing the axe are in Grade 12, their final year of schooling. The sixth student recommended for expulsion is currently in Grade 10. For the matriculants, an expulsion at this stage of the academic year could have devastating consequences for their final examinations and future university placements.

Pending Sanctions: Mixed Outcomes for the Eight Accused
While the majority face expulsion, the fate of the entire group is not uniform. The WCED indicated that the disciplinary outcomes have varied based on the specific involvement of each individual.

Of the original eight learners charged:

• Six have been recommended for immediate expulsion.
• One learner has received a different sanction that does not involve leaving the school.
• One outcome remains pending as the department concludes its review.

The criminal case continues to run parallel to these school sanctions as the court examines the eight counts of assault to do grievous bodily harm.
