Six Family Members Killed In N2 Collision As Car Slams Into Truck Near Mtubatuba

Six members of the Mnyango family have lost their lives following a horrific collision on the N2 in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal, in what officials have described as a deeply painful tragedy.

The fatal crash occurred on Friday night within the Inkosi Mtubatuba local municipality when a Corsa reportedly crashed into a truck. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, but the impact proved deadly for nearly everyone inside the vehicle.

KwaZulu-Natal transport and human settlements MEC Siboniso Duma confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing to determine exactly how the crash unfolded.

N2 Fatal Crash Near Mtubatuba Leaves Family Shattered

Duma expressed his condolences to the grieving family, saying the loss was almost impossible to put into words.

“We have no words to describe the pain that the Mnyango family is going through after the death of six family members,” he said.

Initially, one young girl was rescued alive from the wreckage and rushed to hospital with critical injuries. There was brief hope that she might survive, but she later passed away, raising the death toll to six.

“We were nursing a hope that the brave girl, who sustained serious injuries, was going to survive. Sadly, she has departed,” said Duma.

Victims Identified as Officials Prepare Family Support Visit

Authorities have confirmed the identities of those who died in the crash as:

• Mama Nokuphakama Mnyango (MaMdletshe), 85
• Mama Makhosi kaMnyango Mthembu, 52
• Mvuyani Gcaleka, 43
• Senamile Buthelezi, 29
• Banzi Buthelezi, 6
• Ayanda Pearl Mthembu

Reflecting on the tragedy, Duma said:

“Only God has the power to heal and mend broken hearts. We trust Him unconditionally.”

A delegation from the MEC’s office and the department is expected to visit the bereaved family on Monday at 1pm. The visit will include religious leaders who will provide emotional support and assist with funeral arrangements.

Duma added that the local councillor, Prosper Gumbi, from the uMfolozi local municipality, has remained closely involved with the family during this difficult time.

Road Safety Under Scrutiny After Back-to-Back Deadly Crashes

The Mtubatuba tragedy has intensified concerns around road safety in KwaZulu-Natal, especially after another deadly crash in Isipingo claimed 11 lives on Thursday. Among the victims was a school pupil, while seven others sustained serious injuries.

The injured were transported to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, Prince Mshiyeni Hospital and eThekwini Hospital for treatment.

Following investigations into the Isipingo incident, Duma said both drivers and vehicle owners would face murder charges. Authorities discovered that the truck involved had severely worn tyres, the minibus taxi driver’s professional driving permit had expired in 2023, and the taxi was carrying more passengers than legally allowed.

Despite the recent tragedies, Duma noted that provincial road crash figures showed a decline over the festive season. From the start of the festive period to 2 January, KwaZulu-Natal recorded 187 crashes and 207 fatalities, compared to 203 crashes and 237 deaths during the same timeframe in 2024.

This marks an 8% reduction in crashes and a 13% decrease in fatalities.
