Six Killed In Polokwane Multi-Vehicle Crash On D19 Matlala Road Near Seshego Cross

Six people have lost their lives and six others have been injured following a devastating collision on the D19 Matlala road near the Seshego cross in Polokwane.

The crash, which happened earlier on Tuesday, involved two minibus taxis, a light delivery vehicle (LDV) and a sedan, according to Limpopo transport authorities.

Initial findings indicate that reckless driving may have played a role in the deadly incident.

Polokwane D19 Crash: Authorities Cite Dangerous Overtaking

Limpopo Traffic and Community Safety spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala said preliminary information points to one of the minibus taxis overtaking in a prohibited area.

“What we know is that the MEC of Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, will be visiting the scene to witness the aftermath of what happened here,” Taueatsoala added.

The MEC is expected to assess the situation firsthand as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Eyewitness Account Of Head-On Collision Near Seshego Cross

David Sethole, who was driving the LDV caught up in the crash, recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the pile-up.

“One of the Quantums [minibus taxis] came approaching head-on,” Sethole explained.

“Two cars in front managed to avoid it. It nearly hit another Quantum travelling toward Matlala with us; that driver managed to swerve, but it hit him in the middle of the vehicle, causing it to flip over.”

Sethole described how events unfolded rapidly after the initial impact.

“That is where the Quantum came straight for us. It hit another lady, and I hit her from the back [following the initial impact].”

Emergency Response And Traffic Disruptions On D19 Matlala Road

Emergency services remained at the scene as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause of the crash.

The collision has resulted in significant traffic disruptions along the D19 Matlala road, with motorists urged to exercise caution in the area.

Investigations are ongoing.
