Six Killed In Fiery Head-On Collision Between Two VW Polos Near Newcastle

Six people have lost their lives following a devastating Newcastle crash involving two VW Polo vehicles on the R34 Memel Road in KwaZulu-Natal.

The fatal collision happened between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on Saturday. Emergency teams responded to the scene, where one of the vehicles was engulfed in flames after the impact.

Newcastle Crash Leaves Six Dead After Vehicle Catches Fire

The Newcastle crash claimed six lives after the two vehicles collided head-on on the R34. According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport and Human Settlements, one of the VW Polos caught alight moments after the collision.

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said two occupants trapped inside the burning vehicle died at the scene.

“It is suspected that two victims travelling in this VW Polo were entrapped and perished instantly.”

Four people travelling in the second VW Polo also died, while one survivor was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Sibiya said the official death toll could still change pending the outcome of a forensic investigation.

“The number may change depending on the results of a forensic investigation to be conducted by the South African Police Service.”

Newcastle Crash Follows Another Deadly Collision In KwaZulu-Natal

The latest Newcastle crash comes just days after another fatal head-on collision in the province claimed four lives. Last week, three members of the Msomi family and their helper died when a light motor vehicle collided with a truck at the R612 Rydal intersection in Highflats.

“Last week, we also lost three members of the Msomi family and their helper in another head-on collision involving a light motor vehicle and a truck on the R612 Rydal intersection in Highflats.”

According to Sibiya, the victims in that incident were burnt beyond recognition after their vehicle caught fire.

He added that the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) is working closely with the South African Police Service, which has opened a criminal investigation into Saturday’s collision.

“RTI is working very closely with the SAPS, who have launched a criminal investigation around this accident.”

Road Safety Warning After Newcastle Crash

The Newcastle crash has renewed concerns over road safety during the busy winter holiday period. Sibiya said the department had already warned motorists about increased traffic volumes as families travel across the province.

“On 16 June, we raised our concerns about the fact that the winter holiday season is characterised by increased day and night travel.”

“Many families are visiting their loved ones and travelling to various destinations to enjoy the winter holidays.”

Sibiya said previous engagements with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Road Accident Fund (RAF) highlighted the heavy toll road crashes continue to have on young South Africans.

“We were informed that the RAF paid out R43 billion for injury benefits to young accident survivors aged between 15 and 34.”

He noted that previous reports showed most fatal crashes involving young people occur on Saturdays and Sundays between 5pm and 9pm.

Sibiya also shared RTMC figures showing the number of road fatalities recorded during June over the past four years:

• June 2021: 902 fatalities
• June 2022: 873 fatalities
• June 2023: 833 fatalities
• June 2024: 923 fatalities

He said Head of Department Zibusiso Dlamini is working with stakeholders to relaunch KwaZulu-Natal’s road safety campaign.

“In the meantime, RTI and Operation Shanela teams will continue to be visible on our road networks throughout the province,” Sibiya added.
