Six Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes In Vaal River Crossing In Northern Cape

Police in the Northern Cape have launched an investigation after six people were reported to have drowned when a vessel carrying farm workers overturned in the Vaal River.
The incident occurred on Thursday while a makeshift boat transporting 20 people attempted to cross the river between Vaallus Farm and Olierivier Farm.
Emergency services were called to the scene after several passengers reportedly fell into the water during the crossing.
Vaal River Boat Tragedy Leaves Six Feared Dead
The Vaal River tragedy has claimed the lives of at least two people, while four others remain missing.
Authorities have confirmed that the bodies of two men, aged 25 and 59, have been recovered from the river.
Police spokesperson Molefi Shemane said an inquest docket has been opened following the incident.
“Police in Douglas have registered an inquest docket following the discovery of two bodies after a drowning incident. It was reported that several occupants fell into the water,” said Shemane.
Search Continues For Missing Vaal River Victims
Search and rescue teams have intensified efforts to locate the four people who are still unaccounted for following the Vaal River accident.
According to police, 14 passengers survived the ordeal after the vessel capsized.
“Fourteen occupants survived, while search and rescue operations are continuing to search for four persons who remain unaccounted for. Two bodies have thus far been recovered,” Shemane said.

The operation resumed on Friday as specialist divers and rescue personnel returned to the scene.
Northern Cape Police Investigate Cause Of Vaal River Incident
All survivors were taken to a medical facility in Douglas for treatment following the incident.
Police confirmed that those who received medical attention were later discharged from hospital.
“All survivors were treated and later discharged from a hospital in Douglas,” Shemane added.
The South African Police Service Search and Rescue Unit is continuing with recovery operations as investigators work to establish the circumstances that led to the vessel overturning.
