
Six awaiting trial prisoners have escaped after their police van was assaulted by three men armed with assault guns. Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for them.
A silver Audi allegedly cut off the police van on the junction of Barry Marais Road and Rondebult Road in Brakpan on Friday morning as the inmates were being brought to Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court.

Before fleeing the scene, three armed suspects exited the Audi and allegedly released the awaiting trial convicts. Five of the escapees were due in court for a Dawn Park shop robbery, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
The sixth fugitive was scheduled to appear in court for the first time on a shoplifting accusation.
Five of the fugitives are Zimbabwean nationals.
