SIU Raids Sandton Mansion Of Hangwani Maumela Tied To R2 Billion Tembisa Hospital Corruption

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has conducted a raid on a luxury property in Sandhurst, Sandton, connected to a wealthy businessman implicated in the ongoing corruption scandal at Tembisa Hospital on the East Rand.

This follows findings in the SIU’s interim report, which revealed that more than R2 billion was looted from the hospital through fraudulent procurement processes.
According to investigators, the funds were siphoned off under the guise of legitimate contracts, with many involving no goods delivered despite thousands of purchase orders being processed.
Maumela Syndicate Allegedly at Centre of Massive Fraud
The SIU report identifies three major syndicates believed to have orchestrated the large-scale looting. One of these, the Maumela Syndicate, is allegedly linked to businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, whose lavish assets reportedly include multiple luxury homes and high-end vehicles.

While the SIU has not disclosed the full list of properties or individuals targeted, sources close to the investigation confirm that the Sandhurst mansion is among several sites now under scrutiny as part of efforts to recover stolen public funds.
Wider Crackdown on Gauteng Health Department Corruption
The Sandhurst operation forms part of the SIU’s wider crackdown on systemic corruption within the Gauteng Department of Health and Tembisa Hospital. Investigators are continuing to trace assets, review contracts, and interrogate the complex network of individuals allegedly involved in the scheme.
