No Sign Of Gauteng Missing Teen, Rikus Kylander, Weeks After Snorkelling Tragedy In Mozambique

Two weeks after Gauteng teenager Rikus Kylander (18) disappeared beneath the waves while snorkelling in Mozambique, his devastated family says they are still praying for a miracle.

The former Noordheuwel High School pupil from Krugersdorp vanished on December 18, leaving loved ones clinging to hope as extensive search efforts continue.

“We Are Begging God for a Miracle,” Says Heartbroken Sister

Rikus’s sister, Clarise Kylander (24), said the family remains united in prayer as the agonising wait stretches on.

“We are holding onto hope and continue to beg God for a miracle to bring Rikus home safely,” she said.

Clarise confirmed that she and her parents, Anzél and Donovan, are still in Mozambique, tirelessly searching for the teenager.

“This is a very trying time. We have no words during this difficult time. Our hearts are absolutely shattered, as one can imagine,” she said.

She added that the outpouring of support has helped them endure the ordeal.

“We are deeply thankful to the community and to our friends and family for the amazing support, prayers and messages. Please don’t stop praying for my brother and us.”

Teen Disappeared During Snorkelling Trip With Friends

Rikus had travelled to Mozambique with a group of about 12 friends to celebrate finishing his matric year. The group had only arrived two days before the tragedy.

On the day he went missing, the friends went snorkelling together at around 1pm and later resurfaced at the same spot. It was only then that they realised Rikus was not among them.

Search Continues as Donations Exceed R210,000

Search efforts remain active along the coastline. Renegades Search & Rescue spokesperson Dawn Gounden said teams are working across a wide area.

“Police search and rescue teams remain actively deployed from Kosi Bay to Black Rock, including surrounding areas,” Gounden said.

“Beach patrols continue, and further drone and sea searches will proceed once conditions allow.”

She also thanked local communities for their assistance.
“We thank the Mozambique, Kosi Bay, and Sodwana Bay communities for their ongoing support and vigilance.”

Meanwhile, more than R210,000 has been raised via a BackaBuddy campaign to support the ongoing search.
