Phoenix Siblings Die After Cellphone Allegedly Explodes, Sparking Deadly Fire

Two siblings tragically lost their lives after a cellphone allegedly exploded, setting their home ablaze in Phoenix, north of Durban, on Sunday.

Private security company KZN VIP reported that the fire started on a couch inside the Charclay residence after the cellphone ignited.

Flames Trap Siblings Inside

Emergency services arrived to find the house engulfed in flames and thick smoke, making evacuation attempts difficult.

“It is believed the two siblings, aged between 30 and 35, were trapped in different rooms,” said KZN VIP spokesperson Gareth Naidoo.

• The woman was trapped in her bedroom.
• The man was stuck in the bathroom.

Despite efforts by KZN VIP officers and community members to break windows and rescue the victims, the fire and smoke were too intense.

Desperate Rescue Attempts Fail

Firefighters eventually managed to retrieve the first victim, a female, from the building. Despite immediate CPR attempts, she was pronounced dead after suffering third-degree burns.

The second victim was also removed but succumbed to his injuries despite resuscitation efforts.

Community members and KZN VIP officers attempted to contain the fire using a hosepipe, wet sand, and ladders, but the flames were too dangerous to enter the home.

Authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the explosion and the fire.
