Siblings Arrested For Alleged Fake Kidnapping Scheme In Garankuwa

Police have arrested two siblings in Garankuwa for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping to extort R24,000 from their family members. The incident, which has captured public attention, involves intricate details of deception and corruption.

The case came to light when a sister was reported missing last month. According to the Hawks, a renowned South African police unit, the missing report was a fabrication made with the collusion of her boyfriend.

The siblings, aged 39 and 32, attempted to use the fake kidnapping to demand ransom from their family for the so-called safe return of their ‘kidnapped’ sister.

The Garankuwa police became suspicious when the boyfriend’s account of events did not hold up under scrutiny. Further investigations revealed that the missing person report was entirely false.

A targeted sting operation led to the arrest of the siblings. Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha detailed that during the investigation, it was discovered that the boyfriend, a foreign national, was illegally staying in the country.

This revelation led to his arrest and detention. Subsequently, the siblings attempted to derail the case by allegedly offering a detective R10,000. The bribe triggered a response from the Hawks’ serious corruption crime unit investigators, leading to their arrest on Monday when they handed over the money.

The case was partially heard in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday but has been postponed until the following Tuesday for a bail application. As of now, the sister who was reported missing has yet to return home, adding further complexity to the ongoing investigation.
