Sibiya Says He Supported Disbanding Of PKTT, Rejects Interference Allegations

Suspended deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya told Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption that he supported the decision to dissolve the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Testifying on Monday, Sibiya insisted he did not act on any unlawful instruction from businessmen Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who reportedly mentioned his name in text messages.

Denies Acting on Orders from Businessmen

Sibiya rejected allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, who accused him of interfering in the PKTT’s operations.

He has been linked to the directive issued by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who ordered the disbandment of the unit. However, Sibiya told the committee he had no role in the decision-making process, saying he believed the team’s work needed closer scrutiny.

“I can tell you that we have other political killings throughout the country that are not being attended by the PKTT,” he stated.

Addressing the committee, Sibiya argued that National Commissioner Masemola should have intervened if he disagreed with Mchunu’s directive.

“If the national commissioner had a problem with this type of instruction, it is the type of instruction that was not ever supposed to go further down for implementation,” he said.

The deputy commissioner is expected to return on Tuesday to conclude his testimony before the committee.
